FOODBANK

OUR MISSION: SUPPORT AND HELP PEOPLE ON WELFARE

0
People assisted each Friday

The Foodbank commenced in February 1996 when Father Peter Carrucan who was the parish priest of Holy Eucharist parish asked for some parishioners to set up a food bank in order to assist the refugees coming to Melbourne by providing a welcoming food parcel and a temporary place to stay.

We started by asking parishioners to donate the food. We also had the assistance of Mr Hung (food distributer) who donated fruit and vegetables

After two years running, we decided that the food bank would remain open to all people who were on welfare.

In 2010, when Father Minh came to our parish, he further assisted us in improving our foodbank. Firstly, we applied to Foodbank Victoria to allow us to be supplied food free of charge. After three attempts we were successful.

Because of the amount of food we were getting, we required a larger place to run the food bank. Holy Eucharist School donated two portable classrooms. The Parish donated a cool room and our current freezers.

In 2012 foodbank bought a truck from IZUZU. We were fortunate enough to receive a discount of $20,000 from IZUZU.

The Foodbank has over 700 people registered for food assistance and we provide assistance for between 240 to 300 people every Friday.

As well as this we deliver to people who are home-bound and are unable to collect from the Foodbank itself.

Foodbank is open every Friday from 10:30 am until 2pm except for GOODFRIDAY.

At present, food is supplied by Foodbank Victoria; however, some of the food we have to purchase from them at a small fee. We also receive food from AusHarvet

Foodbank is run by 30 volunteers. The Volunteers are designated to one of our three sections. They are as follows:

  1. Drivers and assistant – to collect from Foodbank or other places when required.
  2. Fruit and vegetables’ section
  3. Perishable goods

Food bank has been going officially for over 20 years and hope with the support of the parish it will continue for a long time.
